King Robert II of Scotland

First Stuart Monarch

Robert Stewart was the son of Walter Stewart, the Sixth High Steward of Scotland and Marjorie, the daughter of Robert the Bruce (King Robert I).   He became the Seventh High Steward of Scotland upon the death of his father at the age of ten.

When Robert the Bruce died, his uncle David became King.  He ruled as King David II of Scotland from 1329 to 1371 and Robert Stewart was the heir apparent.

King David died unexpectedly of natural causes in February 1371.

Robert was fifty five when he succeeded to the throne.  He ruled as King Robert II of Scotland and was the first Stuart Monarch.  He strengthened the Stewart claim to the throne through the promotion of his sons.
