Recognising the Collective Power of Refugees - Basma Allawee

Basma's is a refugee story that does not stand alone, it reflects the stories of many. She encourages us to engage with refugees. To understand who they are, discover their special skills and abilities and then help them to engage with their new communities in meaningful ways.

She was an Engineer in Iraq, yet nobody in her new nation asked her what she had done prior to fleeing. She was offered a housekeeping role. During the Pandemic refugees were given the opportunity to use their skills as health care workers, teachers, administration, catering... they were given an opportunity to be ov value and, as Basma says, contribution speeds up belonging.
